Role: Compositing, Animation, Design, Concept
Production: Playstation/SIEA, Nike
Year: 2018
The last of the 3 Sony x Nike commercials of 2018. The goal of this project was to tie the Paul George shoe into the world and history of the classic PlayStation (PS1) while maintaining a sleek and modern look. I mainly focused on the transition sequence of this spot, where the shoe sheds its low poly shells to reveal the high quality/high poly version of the famous shoe, showcasing its iconic PS1 color scheme.
Various technical tests on what could be quickly achieved in procedural transition from PS1 console to shoe. Ultimately these techniques were not used on this project, but helped further discussion and were used later on the PS Classic project.
Style Frames
Once the team brainstormed with mood boards and various test, I developed these style frames using a variety of tools. C4D was used for the different low poly shells and the ice rings. I then provided the 3D team a camera and reference shoe exported from C4D. They then rendered out a low poly and final shoe using Maya. I then composited this all together in Nuke.
Similar pipeline as the style frames. I was given a high poly shoe model by the 3D team. Using various C4D tools, like the new Volume Mesher, I created several smooth versions of the shoe. I then wrapped different geometry to those smooth shoes: square polys, tri-polys, etc. I was also given an early version of the low poly shoe, but it required a lot of tweaks and additions in C4D like adding logos, displacing the shoe larger to hold the other shells inside it, tweaking shoelaces, and making sure each shell was not intersecting through the next layer of the shoe. I created the camera move in Cinema, and then again provided the camera and reference shoe as a 3D export to the the 3D Maya team. They gave me a render back. Finally, I composited it all together in Nuke. This was a significant collaborative effort with a talented team.
