Production: Playstation/SIEA, Nike, 2018
Software: Maya, Cinema 4D, Nuke
This was the final spot in the 2018 Sony x Nike commercial series, aimed at blending the Paul George shoe with the legacy of the classic PlayStation (PS1) while keeping a sleek, modern aesthetic. I focused on the key transition sequence, where the shoe sheds its low-poly shell to reveal a high-fidelity version beneath, highlighting the iconic PS1 color scheme and elevating the moment of transformation.
I developed a series of technical tests exploring procedural transitions from the PS1 console to the shoe. While these techniques were not used in the final spot, they helped drive creative discussions and were later applied to the PS Classic project
After the team aligned on direction through mood boards and early tests, I developed a series of style frames using a mix of tools. Cinema 4D was used to create the low-poly shells and ice ring elements, and I supplied the 3D team with a camera and reference shoe exported from C4D. The team then rendered both the low-poly and final shoe in Maya, I animated and rendered my shell transformation renders in Cinema4D, and then I finally composited all these elements together into the final animation in Nuke.
Style Frames
Using a pipeline similar to the style frames, I started with a high-poly shoe model from the 3D team and created multiple smooth variants in Cinema 4D using tools such as the Volume Mesher. I then wrapped different geometric shells around these forms, including square and triangular polygon patterns. An early low-poly shoe required extensive refinement in C4D, including adding logos, adjusting scale to contain layered shells, refining laces, and resolving intersections between layers. I developed the camera move in Cinema 4D and shared the camera and reference geometry with the Maya team, who delivered final renders. I then composited the sequence in Nuke, collaborating closely with a highly talented team throughout the process.
